Powerpill - Pacman
Review by vanilla coek

Power-Pill is one of Richard D. James' many aliases. He is best known
as Aphex Twin, although he has gone under the names of AFX and Polygon Window,
among others. The Pacman EP is one of his early works. The album is a
five-track effort featuring the original "Pacman" song and four remixes.

The original song contains loads of samples from the Pacman video game. James
plays with various sound effects from the game while including voice samples of
someone (most likely him) saying "Pacman". While the track may irritate some, I
found it to be enjoyable. It has a nice flow to it, and the video game noises
are used perfectly.

The first of the four remixes, the Ghost Mix, manages to incorporate some dark
ambient sounds to the song. Choci's Hi-Score Mix is almost the complete
opposite of the Ghost Mix, as it is more upbeat and playful. Mickey Finn's Yum
Yum Mix has a harder edge to it, and is probably the most danceable of the
bunch. The fourth remix isn't much different from the original; it's just a
little more drawn out.

Each song makes for a great individual listen, but as an album the experience
gets tiring fast. Hearing the same video game noises track after track will get
on your nerves. That's why it's best to rip the tracks on your hard drive and
just listen to the individual MP3 whenever. Recommended for diehard Aphex Twin
fans only.
