Green Carnation - Light of Day Day of Darkness
Review by Igtenos

It has its ups and downs.

Green Carnation are a progressive, pseudo-doom metal band. Very melodic, and
known for using a lot of non-standard instruments. The song was written by
Tchort, who has been in several black and death metal bands, including
Carpathian Forest and Blood Red Throne. This CD isn't very heavy at all--it
leans more toward rock than metal. It doesn't make it bad, though. Here is the
tracklisting for the album:

01. Light of Day, Day of Darkness (60:05)

Oh yeah, that's right. It's one song. This isn't your typical rock song, it's
more like classical music played with guitars. The whole piece is very slow, the
guitars chug, and it has notable changes every few minutes. A positive note
about this is its diversity: there are even children's choirs used on the CD.
Instrumentally they're very technical, you'll literally have over twenty
melodies catching your ear, and the vocalist on the album is fantastic.

It wouldn't hurt to separate it into multiple tracks, even if it is just one
song. Edge of Sanity did it with Crimson II, after all. The reason it needs
multiple tracks it that it's about ten or fifteen minutes of filler and you
can't skip through the parts that you don't want to hear. There are slow, boring
instrumentals and a girl just wailing for a few minutes... very unpleasant to
hear.

It's still a nice listen, but don't be surprised if you find yourself
fast-forwarding often. They're a great band, and their other (non-single track)
releases are impressive. Overall, I don't think that any song should be sixty
minutes long. Ten minutes out of it, and I'd give it a 10/10. If it was multiple
tracks, it would be 9/10. Since you've no choice but to listen to it all the way
through, I can't give it a very high score, but it's still a good piece.
