BlutEngel - Child of Glass
Review by Senile
The very beginning of BlutEngel (Seelenkrank). Chris Pohl, the lead
male singer of the band, makes this band as a "side project" of A Terminal
Choice. I can admit that this isn't the best cd of BlutEngel but it is a
definitive start to the masterpieces that are soon to follow. As for Chris
Pohl, he is a music god. BlutEngel, A Terminal Choice, and Tumor. Three bands
he is in and from what I have heard from them all, he knows how to make some
really damn beautiful and constructed music.
Child of Glass starts out with a nice dark synth intro to set the stage and from
there the album follows it up with diverse dark music. One of the problems with
this album is some of the songs are just a little too long. With some
songs peaking around 7 minutes or so, the interest just can't seem to be grapsed
when there are too many loops. "Beauty of Suffering" has the "typical"
BlutEngel sound, making it of course, awesome. "Goddess of Lies" longest song
on the cd. Goes through different vocals on the song and has an extremely bad
ass interlude of electronic distortion from 3:00 to about 3:30 but
unfortunately, they don't really use that sound real dominantly or too much
during the song after of that, but the background ambience throughout the song
does add nice sound. Interesting fact, BlutEngel doesn't really swear much but
they do on this song with the lyric "your heart is fucking cold". Just listen
to a lot of thier music, you will notice that they don't really swear. "Weg Zu
Mir" has melodic piano playing at random places in the background to fit with
the interesting drum beat and ambience and the female vocal, in it's haunting
form, just makes the sound perfect. "Das Blut Der Ewigkeit" has a little bit of
a long drawn out intro and is pretty much an instrumental song, has good sound
to it but has more potential then what it is. "My Time" starts off with an
interesting beat with a dark atmosphere. With harsh vocals and psychotic lyrics
about "this is the time you wish you were dead", things of the such, you know it
is going to be a hate ride but it isn't all electronic. The piano interlude,
the gothic sound scaping molding with the piano, it shows that BlutEngel can be
hateful but in a beautiful dark way. "Desire" starts off with some really
wicked electronics and the female vocals do nothing but add onto this dark
erotica. "Du Tanzt" has got to be the most "creepy" song on the album. I think
it is interesting and brilliant. The electronics and beat in the beginning is
superb, really really catchy. The vocals during the song are hauting, with some
kind of distortion or feeback to make it sound like a banshee or something
really haunting and wailing during the verses, switching it up with a melodic
chorus. A taste of the diversity of what BlutEngel is about. "Leave the World"
depressive suicidal gothic sound scape and lyrics. Painted to perfection in
darkness. Heavy emphasis on the percussion with some dark ambience and
interludes of low key synths perfect this. "No God" umm... wow. The intro to
the song is odd but nice, then there are some interesting electronics with some
kick ass percussion. Then it gets better, the percussion picks up faster and
faster, then levels off to a certain pace with haunting ambience and low key
synths. The drum beat makes this song alone and everything else is just music
to your ears! "Warriors of Destiny" what can I say? another great song.
"Suicide" has a little bit of a long intro but sets up the song nicely. Female
vocals is the dominance on this song and some crushing electronics just make it
more wicked. "Demon of Temptation" has an odd synth loop for the intro and
verses which the notes don't really seem to fit together that well but the
chorus helps turn the song around. The organ playing in the song helps turn the
song around completely, the organs are haunting in a weird erotic way. Then
this album ends with a weird outro called "Footworship". If you get the idea,
you probably can guess what it is like.
Overall, I didn't really like this cd all that much before when I had heard it
the first time because there are too many songs with distorted vocals but the
more I listen to it, the more I like it. I'd have to say BlutEngel is one of
the most talented bands that there is out there, and when I say talent, I say
talent in the context that BlutEngel knows how to make gothic erotic music like
nothing I have heard yet. I would say get this cd but fuck it, get all of
BlutEngel's cds!
